Gäfle [Gävle][Published for] Generalstabens karta över Sverige.

Gäfle [Gävle][Published for] Generalstabens karta över Sverige.

Grafik, karta.

[Stockholm] Generalstabens Topografiska Avdelning [Generalstabens Litografiska Institut] 1935. Plate mark 50 x 65 cm. The whole sheet 61 x 80 cm. Hand coloured photo engraving. A couple of short tears and slight browning to the margins. Very nice condition. A fine map of the town of Gävle and a large part of Gästrikland and northern Uppland in east Sweden. The water, roads and borders are hand coloured. The map was surveyed in the year 1900 and updated in 1934 and then published in 1935. In 1876 lithographic printing was introduced to "Generalstabens karta" which made it possible to colour print the maps in large numbers at a low cost. Following this development, the post 1876 maps were published in two versions, engraved (later photo engraved) and lithographic. This is the more expensive photo engraved and hand coloured version printed on fine paper published in limited numbers. "Generalstabens Karta" was an effort to produce a serie of very detailed maps covering all of Sweden. The mapping started in the early 19th century and continued up to the 1920s when the whole country finally was covered. At first the maps were secret, and for military use only. By the mid 19th century they became public. Generalstabens karta is an endless treasure of information because of all the details, down to each cottage and small country road.
