His personal appreciation of creative genius and his distaste for the banal and contrived takes the reader on a meandering and sometimes hilarious ride as he treats the authors of religions as he would writers of fiction. As a believer in gnosis, Bloom also critiques the founders of certain religious movements ability to divine spiritual concepts and symbols. He compares evangelical Jimmy Sawggart's ministerial style to shamanism, savors a gnostic flavor from Southern Baptist Edgar Mullins and evaluates the effectiveness of Joseph Smith and Ellen White's revelation and prophetic leadership. This work is certainly not an exhaustive or comprehensive exegesis of the religious writings of American born religions.
