It consists of several chapters by various authors - and is edited by Simon Bromley, John Clarke, Steve Hinchliffe, and Stephanie Taylor. It's the second volume in a two-part series, and in order to fully understand what's discussed in this book you'll need to first read "Making Social Lives" (by the same editors).
The aim of the book is to introduce first-year undergraduate students to the study of society. The book is well-written and presumes no previous knowledge of social science. As with its companion text, an interdisciplinary approach is advanced - and contemporary British society is explored by way of three major 'strands' - namely: (1) material lives, (2) connected lives, and (3) ordered lives. Through the use of these strands, the book examines such issues as risk, migration, identity, governance, and authority.
If you're interested in contemporary social science and require a book that helps build an understanding of the foundational aspects of modern society, then I recommend this book. However, it does not adequately explain what social science is about - and it says very little on the disciplines (e.g. economics, psychology, social policy) that comprise it. Furthermore, the book fails to engage with the social thought on which the social sciences were build (e.g. liberalism, Marxism) - and lacks any sort of in-depth theoretical narrative.
