Discover this unique culture through a combination of authoritative, accessible scholarship and magnificent photographs.
• Drawing on the most recent discoveries and theories, the book investigates key cultural, spiritual and artistic traditions of this vast civilization and describes the country's major scientific and technological innovations, including gunpowder, printing and the compass.
• A wealth of colour photography and artwork, together with a lively and authoritative text, vividly evokes the customs and traditions of the Chinese world, from life in the most remote rural villages to the running of the imperial court.

"Edward Shaughnessy is Professor of Early China in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilisation at the University of Chicago. He is the General Editor of this book that pulls together the work of 8 other acknowledged experts in Chinese studies. This book is a highly accessible collection of articles that cover the development of Chinese civilsation from its legendary prehistory (prior to 1500BC), until the eventual collapse of imperial rule in 1912. …
• This book is separated into three parts that contain many concise and relatively short chapters:
Part I - The Chinese World.
Part II- Belief and Ritual.
Part III - Creation and Discovery.
• The authors contribute throughout the book, with each offering poignant and reliable insight into the area of their particular speciality. For instance, Mark Edward Lewis (of Stanford), writes about 'Conformity and Change, whilst Ni Yibin, of The National University of Singapore, offers contributions on two areas - 'The Fine and Decorative Arts', and 'The Performing Arts'. Vivienne Lo, of the University of London, comments on 'Healing and Medicine'. Edward Shaunghnessy has articles attributed to him throughout, including his thoughts on the Book of Change (Yijing). Peter Golas covers the subject of 'Technology and Science'. This is a very good book full of clear thinking and logical presentation. The authorship consists of both Chinese and non-Chinese input, and this fact adds a certain 'all round' legitimacy to subject at hand.
• This is an excellent introduction to Chinese history that is sympathetic to the past that is lavishly illustrated throughout. It can serve as a springboard to further study. The further work of Mark Edward Lewis is particularly outstanding. A superb book." - Adrian Chan-Wyles Ph.D.
