Public collections of work from the former have been established at Newlyn and Penzance, and Tate St Ives was opened in 1993 to present ‘works of art in the area in which they were conceived and close to the landscape and sea which influenced them’. This Illustrated Companion was published in 1993 to mark the opening of the Gallery and reprinted in 1994. A view of Tate Gallery St Ives from Porthmeor Beach is shown on the front cover. /

The companion is profusely illustrated with b/w and colour photographs and reproductions of works. Thirty-seven colour illustrations are accompanied by commentaries. The Introduction points out that the works illustrated have been drawn from the Gallery’s opening displays since it has no static collection and the works on display change annually. The book contains suggestions for Further Reading. /

A series of brief essays on a wide range of topics are presented, each being accompanied by illustrations and reproductions. The first two, ‘The New Building’ and ‘The Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden’ describe the key sites, the former occupying the site of the town’s old gasworks, whilst the latter offers an insight into the work and outlook of one of the leading 20th-century artists who lived and worked in Trewyn studios, now the Barbara Hepworth Museum, between 1949-75. Bronze, stone and wood sculptures are displayed in the Museum and Sculpture Garden, together with paintings, drawings and archive material.

A group of essays address the chronological development of St Ives as an artists’ colony, ‘Art in Cornwall before 1920’ which discusses the visits of Turner, Whistler, Sickert and Mortimer Menpes, the arrival of Harewood Robinson and William Eady in 1885, the establishment of the St Ives Arts Club in 1888, the activities of Matthew Smith, Charles Ginner, Frances Hodgkins, Emily Carr, Cedric Morrs, Lett Haines and Cornelia Dobson between 1000-20; ‘Early Modernism in Britain and Cornwall’, the ‘discovery’ of Alfred Wallis by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in 1928, Bernard Leach’s pottery, Crysedale prints and design; ‘Cornwall and British Modernism in the 1930s’, William Scott, Stanley Spencer, Peter Lanyon, Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Naum Gabo;‘ The War Years’, Hepworth, Nicholson, Wallis, Margaret Mellis, Gabo, and ‘A New Force for Abstract Art’, Borlase Smart, Sutherland, Bryan Wynter, Victor Pasmore, Lanyon and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham.
