A compilation of essays from the late sixties by some of the most perceptive cultural critics involved in the rock music scene. (To be clear, this is not rock and roll, a fifties genre, but rock, the music of the Cultural Revolution of the late sixties.) The book is fascinating since it straddles the line between serving as a primary and secondary source. These were music intellectuals' early attempts to comprehend rock music's relationship to the broader counterculture movement and to other music genres like folk. Along with the magazines and other media in which these authors published, the essays in the Age of Rock can be read as the first tentative steps toward understanding (and staking out positions within) an ideology of rock music. For that alone, it's worth picking up.
