A summer in Skye

A summer in Skye

Inbunden bok.

Hyggligt skick. With an introduction by W. Forbes Gray. Illustrated in color by John Blair. "A summer in Skye" is definately considered to be Smiths´ 'magnum opus'.--- W. P. Nimmo, Hay & Mitchell, Edinburgh 1912. 574 pages in publishers green cloth hardcover, with gold imprinted text and decorations on the spine, and black imprinted text on the front cover which is illustrated with the same landscape image as the frontispiece (tipped-in plate) contains, but painted differently. The book is illustrated with additional tipped-in color plates. --- The hardcover shows pretty obvious traces of shelf-wear and handling, with conrners bumped, front ones bent inwards. Spine ends are also bumped and covers have some smudge/spots. Outer hinges are partly shelf-worn. Contents are decent, with clean and fairly bright pages, eventhough the preliminaries show some foxing. Throughout the rest of the contents light foxing appear sporadically. When page edges were cut to open the book, page 437 got an 8 cm. tear (closed) in the middle. Front and low edges are untrimmed while top edges are colored, but also alittle smudged. Measure (base x height): 15 x 20.5 cm. Synopsis from one of the editions on Goodreads: "In 1864, Alexander Smith, poet and essayist, spent six weeks on the Isle of Skye. These weeks were among the most contented of his life and in this book, his magnificent prose poem, the reader will discover a celebration of the Skye life, scenery, and history that was to bewitch him as he uncovered the subtle and mystical charm of the island. A keen observer of life, the author portrays the islanders, both at work and at play, and the customs that have now died out. His descriptions of the island and its landscape remain among the finest ever written."
